The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) released a study in 2007 that reported significant evidence that processed meat and red meat caused bowel cancer, especially when too much is consumed. However, there is something you can do to limit the potential risks.
The WCRF recommends eating 500 g (18 oz.) or less of cooked red meat on a weekly basis. For processed beef, eat as little as possible, as nitrites are thought to be hazardous to your health. The 2007 WCRF report recommends that consumption not exceed 300 g (11 oz.) per week, indicating that more can increase colorectal cancer risk.
